      <image:title>Sky - Kona</image:title>
<image:caption>2020 Ocean Water (Equator, Keauhou), acrylic pigment, gouache, sumi ink, pastel In the shelter of Mauna Loa and Hualālai, the calm waters along the Kona coast of Hawaiʻi Island have long provided safe harbors for voyaging canoes. The diverse landscapes, from rugged lava fields to rich forests and farmlands, continue to serve as resources for the canoe voyaging community, providing a variety of trees such as hau and koa for canoe building, and agricultural provisions to nourish crews and connect them to this ʻāina. Kona generously contributes to the holistic, community wide support system that makes voyaging possible. In an effort to reciprocate this generosity and provide for future generations, the canoe voyaging community planted a koa grove in Keauhou mauka during the early 1990s with the hope that someday these trees will grow large enough to be carved into voyaging canoe hulls for generations to come. This painting, poured with coastal sea water gathered in Keauhou Bay and deep sea water from the equator, honors all that Kona has given and the future canoes we hope these forests will birth.</image:caption>

<image:caption>2016, approximately 30' x 51" - ocean water, acrylic pigments, sumi ink O‘ahu, being formed and shaped by salt water as a primary material, suggests a collaborative gesture with the ocean. Collected from the six moku, or district coastlines, the waters used to create this drawing are allowed to flow, mix, and dry freely, invoking the visual sensations of coastal topography and tides. Suspended in the convergence of land and sea, O‘ahu examines both the physical and theoretical boundary located at the cessation of land, and explores the inherent continuity and connectivity carried through the realm of water. O‘ahu strives to emulate a seamless connection between island and ocean; one that traverses seas, linking all land and all people.</image:caption>
